YUMA, Ariz. – In an effort to constantly advance healthcare and improve the lives of women in our community, Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) is excited to introduce a new surgical procedure for women who suffer from uterine fibroids. The Acessa Laparoscopic Radiofrequency Ablation, also known as the Acessa Procedure, is a less invasive option for treating non-cancerous growths in the uterus that often cause painful symptoms.
Dr. Dania Sweidan, an OB/GYN at YRMC Women’s Health Center, leads this groundbreaking procedure locally and is the sole surgeon currently offering patients this cutting-edge care without having to travel outside of Yuma. She has been successfully performing this procedure for a year and is eager to offer its benefits to more women.
“Offering this procedure in Yuma marks a significant advancement in healthcare,” stated Dr. Sweidan. “If you are experiencing symptoms related to fibroids, the Acessa Procedure may be a great option for you. However, it’s important to note some people may prefer or require alternative treatments that better align with their medical needs. Our goal is to offer each patient a personalized solution that meets their specific health needs and preferences.”
According to a study by Johns Hopkins, between 20-70 percent of women will develop fibroids during their reproductive years. Symptoms vary but include heavy bleeding, pelvic discomfort, frequent urination, constipation and lower back pain. In the past, local treatment options were limited and required travel to other cities or undergoing a full hysterectomy.
The Acessa Procedure involves creating only two small surgical openings, which leads to minimal scarring. The procedure delivers heat directly into the fibroid, destroying its tissue and providing relief from the symptoms. Patients can expect a shorter recovery time, typically being cleared to return home on the same day as the procedure.
Dr. Robert Trenschel, YRMC President and CEO, added, “As a hospital, we take great pride in Dr. Sweidan’s efforts to introduce this procedure to our community. Her dedication to delivering efficient and minimally invasive solutions highlights YRMC’s commitment to putting patients first and advancing care locally.”
