With the introduction of Yuma’s first and only Ion robotic system, Onvida Health is transforming how it cares for lung health and positioning itself as a leader in advanced lung diagnostics. This reflects the hospital’s commitment to progress and, most importantly, putting patients first.
Ion is an advanced robotic-assisted system designed to improve the early detection of lung cancer. This state-of-the-art technology allows doctors to reach and evaluate small lung nodules (masses of tissue) with precision, helping detect lung cancer at an early, more treatable stage. This system enables doctors to access all areas of the lungs and perform minimally invasive biopsies when necessary.
The introduction of the Ion robot would not have been possible without the dedication and expertise of Dr. Abhinav Chandra, Dr. Kulothungan Gunasekaran, and Dr. Derek Vonhaag. Their commitment to innovation and patient care played a crucial role in implementing this technology and making sure the local community has access to the best diagnostic tools available.
“Bringing the Ion robotic system to Onvida was an easy decision because we see firsthand how critical early detection is, especially when treating the lungs,” said Dr. Gunasekaran. “Thanks to the unwavering support of our hospital administration, Onvida Health’s Cancer Center continues to make world-class care more accessible, combining advanced technology with compassionate care to support patients at every stage of their journey.”
Lung cancer is often difficult to detect in its early stages, as symptoms may not appear until the disease has progressed. The Ion robot changes that by allowing doctors to navigate deep into the lungs with more accuracy, making it easier to diagnose potential issues before they become more serious. This minimally invasive approach also means patients experience a quicker recovery and less discomfort.
“Early detection is absolutely critical in cancer care,” added Dr. Chandra. “At Onvida Health, we encourage everyone to stay informed about screening guidelines based on their age, gender, and family history.”
