The end of Abril marks the celebration of National Volunteer Week (Abril 21-27), and at Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC), there is indeed much to celebrate. The organization’s more than 200 volunteers from all walks of life are the heartbeat of compassion and service at YRMC. From high school students to retirees, and from serving as cart drivers and assisting in retail shops to offering support at the Cancer Resource Center, they all share one thing in common: a giving spirit and the desire to create meaningful experiences for others in our community.
“At YRMC, we consider our volunteers to be more than just helping hands – they are part of our YRMC family,” said YRMC Director of Volunteer Services Elizabeth Hammonds. “Their compassion, unwavering dedication, and willingness to give back have a profound impact on everyone who walks through our doors. This National Volunteer Week, we are honored to celebrate them and we express our deepest gratitude for the top-notch service they provide.”
“Being a YRMC volunteer isn’t just about giving back, it’s about making a real connection with people during a vulnerable time in their lives,” said Laura McDaniel “Whether it’s a friendly smile or a moment of comfort, knowing that my dogs and I can make a positive difference in someone’s day is incredibly rewarding.”
This week of recognition highlights the incredible contributions of YRMC’s Junior, adult and pet therapy programs. Each program plays a vital role in ensuring YRMC can continue to deliver outstanding care to our community. So far this year, YRMC volunteers have donated more than 7,500 hours of service.
Voluntarios junior
The future of Yuma’s healthcare is bright thanks to 61 dedicated junior volunteers, ages 15 to 18. These remarkable young adults not only explore the healthcare field but also actively contribute to the hospital’s mission with their enthusiasm and fresh perspectives. By participating in our Junior Volunteer Program, they gain invaluable hands-on experience, develop essential job skills, and forge meaningful connections within the community. Through their dedication, they not only assist in day-to-day operations but also inspire hope and resilience in our patients.
Adult Volunteers
At the heart of YRMC’s compassionate care are 106 adult volunteers, whose commitment and tireless efforts are instrumental in creating a supportive and nurturing environment for patients and staff alike. From providing comfort and assistance at the bedside, managing administrative tasks and blood drives and becoming cart drivers, adult volunteers play a vital role in enhancing the overall patient experience.
Pet Therapy Volunteers
Adding a special touch to patient care, YRMC’s team of seven certified canine companions, along with Poppy the miniature horse, embodies the healing power of animal-assisted therapy at YRMC. These dedicated volunteers undergo rigorous training and evaluation to ensure they can safely interact with patients, providing comfort, companionship, and moments of joy during challenging times. Their presence not only brightens the spirits of our patients but also fosters a sense of connection and emotional well-being that is invaluable to the healing process. Through their unconditional love and gentle companionship, our pet therapy volunteers and their handlers make a profound difference in the lives of those we serve.
