Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) is gearing up for the highly anticipated Match Day 2024, an event that marks a significant milestone for medical graduates across the country. Taking place on Friday, March 15, this day will determine the future paths of recently graduated physicians as they embark on the next phase of their medical careers.

On Match Day, the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) informs medical students about the next phase of their medical training after years of relentless hard work and dedication during medical school. The process is rigorous and competitive, with applicants and residency programs ranking each other to secure the best possible placements.

“Match Day at YRMC is a special occasion, celebrated with great enthusiasm and support for the next generation of medical professionals joining our community,” shared Dr. Kristina Diaz, Executive Medical Director of Primary Care, Chief Academic Officer and program leader. “It’s a time when the entire YRMC team unites in spirited support of the incoming wave of medical professionals, celebrating their achievements and embracing the promise they bring.”

In 2013, YRMC took an important step in securing future healthcare coverage in our region by launching the YRMC Family and Community Medicine Residency Program. The three-year training program for recently-graduated primary care physicians has become top-rated and receives an average of 2,000 applications annually, a testament to the program’s success.

Since the program’s launch, 51 residents have graduated with a 100 percent pass rate on the American Board of Family Physicians exam. Of those residents, 29 percent have chosen to stay and practice in Yuma. This year, YRMC will welcome 11 new residents, growing their complement to 27 residents for academic year 2024-2025, with plans to expand the program to 36 residents by July 2026.

YRMC recognizes the invaluable role of its residents and their profound impact on the Yuma community. They not only provide essential medical care but also infuse our healthcare landscape with fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and unwavering dedication to excellence. In 2023, residents logged an impressive 15,696 patient visits and generously volunteered over 1,000 hours, exemplifying their unwavering commitment to compassionate care and community service.

“At YRMC, we’re thrilled to welcome our new matches as they embark on this exciting journey,” says Dr. Diaz. “Match Day is not only a celebration of their achievements but also the beginning of an incredible partnership. We stand ready to embrace their talents, nurture their aspirations, and together, improve the lives of everyone around us.”

YRMC extends its congratulations to all medical students participating in Match Day 2024 and looks forward to welcoming the newest members of its professional family.
