In celebration of the spirit of volunteerism in our community, Onvida Health is proud to recognize four incredible volunteers, each over the age of 90, whose dedication and heart for service have spanned decades. These individuals have a combined 110 years of service and, between them, have contributed more than 39,500 hours to our healthcare system, proving that when it comes to volunteering, age is just a number.

Meet the volunteers:

Jean Armstrong – With 19 years of service and approximately 2,274 hours of volunteer work, 91-year-old Jean is a beloved and dedicated member of the Onvida Health volunteer team. At the Surgery Desk, she has played a key role in creating a compassionate and efficient environment for patients and families, keeping them informed about their loved ones. A key member of the scholarship committee, Jean continues to support special events like the Dillard Sale and other fundraisers.

Marie Van Orden – An Onvida Health volunteer for 47 years, Marie, aged 90, has given about 24,752 hours of service. Known for creating beautiful silk flower arrangements and candy bouquets that lift the spirits of hospital patients, Marie also crochets stuffed animals for children, bringing them comfort during their stay. Her dedication and creative talents have earned her the 2021 “Outstanding Volunteer Award” from Yuma County.

Marilyn Griffiths – At 91 years old, Marilyn has volunteered for 29 years and contributed over 8,289 hours of service to Onvida Health. Much of her time has been spent in the accounting department, where she assists with paperwork and supports the staff. Marilyn has also been a key part of several committees, including the Volunteer Memorial Wall and Scholarship Committees. Over the years, she has served as Vice President and President of the Auxiliary Board, demonstrating her strong leadership and unwavering commitment to the Onvida Health community.

Robert (Bob) Jungers – At 93 years old, Bob has been a dedicated volunteer for over 15 years, contributing approximately 4,585 hours of his time. From transporting patients and families with a friendly smile as a cart driver to welcoming visitors at the Administration Desk, Bob’s kindness leaves a lasting impact. Now volunteering in the Volunteer Services Department, he assembles orientation packets, tags patient gifts, laminates staff badges, and supports special projects, always embodying a spirit of warmth and care that enriches the hospital community.

“During a hospital visit, I enjoyed riding in the cart and asked how I could become a driver. They connected me with Elizabeth [Hammonds], and I started volunteering, which was a lot of fun! After I could no longer drive, I continued volunteering at the front desk, working 25 hours a week,” shared Jungers. “Volunteering means a lot to me. I’ve built strong camaraderie with the people I work with, and I feel a sense of belonging.”

These volunteers represent the essence of selflessness and commitment to the Yuma community, continuing to make an impact into their 90s.

“Jean, Marie, Marilyn and Bob have set an incredible example for all of us,” said Elizabeth Hammonds, Director of Volunteer Services at Onvida Health. “Their contributions over the years reflect not only their dedication to Onvida Health but also their deep love for our community. We feel so honored to celebrate their lasting impact and selfless service.”

Volunteers at Onvida Health play a key role in supporting patients, assisting staff, and enhancing the overall healthcare experience. The continued service of these four individuals is a testament to the lasting value of giving back, and their stories inspire all generations to make a difference through volunteerism.
